Health Department to Provide Flu Vaccination in Special Clinics for All Age Groups
September 06, 2010The DeWitt/Piatt Bi-County Health Department announced today that they are planning special clinics to provide both seasonal and H1N1 vaccination to local residents.
“The state Health Department has just relaxed restrictions of the H1N1 vaccination and we are now allowed to vaccinate all age groups”, said David Remmert, Administrator for the Health Department. The CDC had initially noted that only those individuals in targeted priority groups should receive the vaccine, which included pregnant women, caregivers of infants younger than 6 months of age, first responder emergency personnel including healthcare workers, those aged 6 months through 24 years old, and those age 25 through 64 with a chronic illness (such as asthma, diabetes, or disease of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and other immunocompromised individuals). Now that clinic demands for these priority groups has waned, the state has now cleared the way for broader vaccination coverage.
In addition, the Health Department will also offer regular seasonal flu vaccination as part of these special clinics. “Unfortunately, there has been a nationwide shortage of seasonal flu vaccine and so we haven’t been able to offer that to local residents beyond our initial shipment. New supplies were just received and our intent will be to provide both vaccinations through these special clinics as supplies hold out,” said Remmert. The H1N1 will remain free of charge to ensure the greatest protection to local residents; the seasonal flu vaccine costs $30, and Medicare and Medicaid are accepted. Information about the flu and these vaccinations is available at www.idph.state.il.us.com.
The flu is an infection of the respiratory tract caused by the influenza virus. Compared with most viral respiratory infections, such as the common cold, influenza infection often causes a more severe illness. Typical influenza illness includes fever (usually 100 degrees F to 103 degrees F in adults and often even higher in children) and respiratory symptoms, such as cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, as well as headache, muscle aches and extreme fatigue. Although nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can sometimes accompany influenza infection, especially in children, these symptoms are rarely the primary symptoms. The term "stomach flu" is a misnomer that is sometimes used to describe gastrointestinal illnesses caused by organisms other than influenza viruses.
